Ah, I love those caramels. The originals, that is. The chocolate doesn’t interest me and I’ve never see the strawberry (thank God, because they sound revolting). I eat them the opposite way you do though. I pop the out the centre and eat the caramel first, saving that little bit of sugary bliss for last.

I was also surprised at how good the chocolate caramels were, but I have never seen the strawberry flavor. The regular caramels are a personal favorite, but they have been stale the last few times I have bought any. They seem to have a flour taste to them, but I still enjoy them.

I only ever liked the cream filling in these. The caramel just never did it for me for some reason (I think it’s the flour taste John mentioned). But sometimes I get them anyways because I love the filling so much.

I just got these in Licorice and boy are they good. You may be able to get some from Goetze’s Candy Plant in Baltimore, but they only made a limited batch. Call 1-800-free-411 for the number for Goetze (pronounced ‘Gets’) in Baltimore, MD.

different tastes for different people, I suppose. while in Iraq a few years back, I tasted my first strawberry creams and promptly ordered a couple hundred. Everyone stopped by my desk to grab a daily handful.

what on-line sites are cheapest for ordering??

The supernaturally delicate cream in the middle is totally the best part. But what I also love so very very much about Goetze’s Caramel Creams is the unorthodox texture of the caramel. You’re right - it is rather like dough. If I recall correctly, wheat flour is one of the main ingredients in the caramel and it gives it a strangely compelling, really hearty bread-like flavor. Sounds odd but it works.

The original Caramel Creams are one of my all-time favorite candies. I hadn’t had them in ages, but just got some on a trip to Dylan’s Candy Bar in NY. A sweet walk down memory lane!

I am embarrassed yet still willing to admit that I am ridiculously addicted to Caramel Creams. I love the floury taste of the caramel; I love the wonderfully confusing texture of both the caramel and the cream.
I used to love eating them inside-out, but my favorite way now is to just chomp the whole thing and enjoy the melding of texture and flavor…Delicious!

(I work in a health food store. This is one of the few I refuse to give up in my “eat whole, eat natural, eat local” food mantra. Just too good to ignore. And if this means I die early….I’ll die happy and full of delicious candy. How childish….but wonderful.)

Please, please someone let us know the recipe for the cream in the caramel creams. I have been looking for the recipe for a long time. I could eat a bowl full at any time. I can take or leave the caramel they just happen to come along with the cream.

I really have to remember to read your blog more often. I almost missed today’s picture of Carmel Creames, the link to your review, and the comments which inform me that Goetze’s Caramel Creams (a guilty pleasure of mine) are made just up the road in Baltimore - AND that they make a licorice version. Wow!

    The website’s a hoot: http://www.goetzecandy.com

I wonder if they have tours?

I’ve noticed at my local CVS that the bags of Goetze’s C. Creams have changed - the package has the CVS brand, not the Goetze brand, on it, there are fewer, and they don’t seem as fresh.

Their website says they have an apple version as well—sounds interesting, but I don’t know that they are interesting enough to buy a 10 lb box just to try them. Hmmm.

EvasGramma - I have tried the Licorice ones ... they’re stellar. Unfortunately I only had a handful of samples from a trade show and haven’t been able to buy them in stores on the west coast.

I would pay big money to taste these candies within one month after they were made. I am guessing that they are 18 months old when they get to the consumer!

I absolutely love caramel. Even though these candies don’t have a very good silky caramel texture, (or taste for that matter) the chewiness is great as is the melting cream centre. It makes me sad when I undo the twisty wrapper just to find they’ve gone stale.

I recently bought a bag of Goetze Caramel Creams. It was shocking to say the least. I cannot recall a more insipid candy experience. The taste of raw flour dominated the flavor. There was no real creamy caramel elegance one would expect. When I discovered, upon looking at the ingredient list, the main component was wheat flour, I figured something had just gone wrong with this batch. After a second piece only to discover same such experience, I tossed the rest. Never again.

I am not a big candy person, but caramel creams are addicting, when they are fresh! The chocolate ones are really good too. (They are especially good after being accidentally left in a hot car for a couple hours, I’ve found out.)

Can Caramel Cremes be used for Caramel Apples? I have a bag from last year. Because the candies got hard they are too difficult to chew. I definitely do not want to toss them out. Can you help me? Any other recipe idea would be helpful. Thanks!
